ABOUT NORTHLIGHT

Northlight Arts Centre is a not-for-profit arts centre and gallery based in Chapel Allerton, Leeds.

We operate as a community resource, providing a supportive environment where people of all ages and backgrounds can explore and develop their creativity.

What We Do

We run a programme of workshops, exhibitions, events and markets, alongside a café and shared space that is open to visitors throughout the week.

As a family-friendly space, Northlight is used in different ways — for classes, performances, exhibitions, or simply as somewhere to spend time.

Access & Community

A core part of Northlight is making creative activity accessible.

We run weekly Pay As You Feel art groups, helping to remove financial barriers and create a welcoming, supportive environment for people to take part.

People come here in different ways, and we aim to keep the space open, inclusive and easy to be in — whether you’re joining a session or just coming in for a while.

Supporting Artists

We support artists through teaching opportunities, exhibitions, markets and the sale of work within the space.

Our aim is to create an environment where artists can develop their practice, connect with audiences, and be part of a wider creative community.

The Building

Northlight Arts Centre is based within a shared creative building in Chapel Allerton, home to artists, makers and independent businesses.

The building is managed by North Art, with Northlight operating as an independent Community Interest Company, delivering workshops, events and community activity.

This mix of organisations and activity gives the building its character — a place shaped by creativity, shared use and a wide range of people.

Partnerships

We work with organisations at both local and national level to broaden access to creative opportunities.

Our partners include the Royal Voluntary Service, Irish Arts Foundation, JazzLeeds, Arts & Minds, Aspire (Community Links), Leeds City Council, and a network of professional artists.

Why It Matters

We believe that art and creativity play an important role in building resilient individuals and connected communities.

By removing barriers to participation and working collaboratively, we aim to create a space that supports both individual development and a wider sense of belonging.

Looking Ahead

We continue to develop Northlight as a sustainable, artist-led space that balances:

  • high-quality creative activity

  • community access

  • opportunities for artists
