HANDMAKING
ART MATERIALS
Northlight Arts Centre and Old Mill Arts bring you inspiring workshops that explore the hidden profundity of hand making creative materials. Through practising and sharing these age old crafts, we hope to remember parts of ourselves eclipsed by mass production, and to celebrate the rich history of the handmade arts.
From Ink Making from foraged plants to Pastel Making and handmade papers these half day workshops are suitable for all abilities: beginners and seasoned artists alike.
Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity to work with the artists from Old Mill Arts and learn from their years of experience of extracting pigments to create quality creative materials you can use in your own work.
Old Mill Arts was founded by artists and foragers Lucy Lee and Edward C Campbell. They wanted to create spaces for inquiry into the connection between creativity, spirit and our natural environment. Through Old Mill Arts, Edward and Lucy regularly host creative workshops with the emphasis on making creative materials such as paints, inks, dyes, clays and pigments, alongside the historical and cultural context of creative materials.

THE ART OF INK MAKING
A PALETTE FROM PLANTS
With Old Mill Arts
Full day Workshop
10am - 3.30pm
In the workshop Palette from Plants students will be guided through the various stages of working with plants to create colourful inks. There is a remarkable variety of colours that are possible from the world around us and during the workshop there will be demonstrations of how to modify colours to achieve a further spectrum of results. Working with a selection of plant sources, both foraged and grown, we will look at how the colours from plants were used historically with plenty of pre made colours to experience throughout the day.
Participants will go home with extensive notes on the subject as well as some freshly made ink from the day.
No prior experience required, just a willingness to experiment! Extra things to bring for the workshop-a few paint brushes of choice and a couple of spare old jars of any size.

PASTEL MAKING
FROM EARTH & PLANT PIGMENTS
With Old Mill Arts
Full day Workshop
10am - 3.30pm
Who doesn't love a tray of colourful pastels?
There’s something deeply wonderful about seeing naturally derived colour in this form. In this workshop we will first learn how to process wild foraged pigments from Yorkshire and beyond before learning the ratio and types of binders needed to transform the pigments into soft pastels. There will also be a look at a blue indigo pigment from a type of plant which can also be turned into a pastel to further the spectrum of colour possibilities.
Using these earth and plant pigments, students will learn the art of tinting their pastels to achieve a further range of shades and colours from one initial pigment.
By the end of the workshop, students will have plenty of soft pastels to take home, as well as comprehensive notes to continue on with their pastel making journey.
